Suffolk becomes a Sustainable Food Place – what this milestone means

Suffolk has officially gained Sustainable Food Place status; an important milestone that recognises the county’s growing commitment to creating a fairer, healthier and more sustainable food system for everyone.

Through the pulling together multiple organisations, communities and individuals, Suffolk has been able to show that food sits at the heart of many of the challenges & opportunities facing our county today.

What is a Sustainable Food Place?

The Sustainable Food Places network is a nationwide programme that supports towns, cities and counties to transform the way food is produced, accessed and valued. To gain Sustainable Food Place status, areas must demonstrate strong partnership working across key themes, including food access and inequalities, health and wellbeing, sustainable farming and land use, climate and nature, and food economy and education.

For Suffolk, achieving this status confirms that the foundations are in place for a shared, cross section vision, and a commitment to tackling both immediate needs and long‑term systemic change.

Why this matters for Suffolk

Food connects many of the issues affecting day to day life in Suffolk, from public health and environmental resilience to economic vitality and social wellbeing. Yet these challenges cannot be solved by organisations or sectors working alone.

Sustainable Food Place status recognises Suffolk’s ability to bring together voices from across the whole food system: local authorities, health services, environmental organisations, farming and land‑based groups, education providers, community organisations and frontline food support services.

At a time when rising food costs, health inequalities and climate pressures continue to affect residents and communities, this joined‑up approach is more important than ever.

Moving from recognition to impact

Gaining Sustainable Food Place status is not an endpoint, it is a starting point.

It strengthens Suffolk’s ability to attract investment, influence policy and share learning nationally.

Perhaps most importantly, it creates a platform for more affective collaboration. By aligning environmental ambitions with public health priorities, community support with prevention, and local food production with economic resilience, Suffolk can address root causes rather than just symptoms.

A collective achievement

This marker shows the team work and cross organisational work across the past few years. The expertise and lived experience this has taken to shape Suffolk’s food system so far.

As Suffolk continues to build on this work, the aim continues:  working together to create a food system that works better for people, place and planet, now and for generations to come.
